What to do next

Your space is working harder. Check whether it’s more visitors or bigger baskets, so you know what to repeat.

No industry averages here, on purpose. Published sales-per-square-foot figures mix store formats, regions and years, and we haven’t found one we’d stand behind. Your own trend, and your own stores side by side, are the fair comparison.

  • Annualized sales = net sales × 12 ÷ months covered This year to date: $290,000 × 12 ÷ 6 = $580,000
  • Sales per sq ft = annualized sales ÷ selling area $580,000 ÷ 2,400 sq ft = $241.67
  • Gross margin per sq ft = sales per sq ft × gross margin % $241.67 × 46% = $111.17
  • Change = (this − first) ÷ first × 100 = +11.5%

Dor counts visitors at the door and pairs them with your POS sales. $150 per location per month plus $300 hardware.

Worked example.

A 2,400 sq ft shop sold $520,000 last year. Six months into this year it has sold $290,000.

  • Last year: $520,000 ÷ 2,400 = $216.67 per sq ft.
  • This year annualized: $290,000 × 12 ÷ 6 = $580,000, ÷ 2,400 = $241.67 per sq ft, up 11.5%.
  • At a 46% margin that’s $111.17 of gross margin per sq ft, versus $104.00 last year at 48%.

Annualizing a half-year assumes the second half looks like the first. If your fourth quarter is your biggest, compare January–June with last January–June instead.

What to do with the number.

  • Compare areas, not just the store. Measure each department or fixture zone. The weakest square feet are your best candidates for a new category or a better display.
  • Weigh it against rent. Annual rent per square foot divided by sales per square foot shows how much of each sales dollar the space costs.
  • Split traffic from performance. Sales per square foot falls when fewer people come in and when the same people buy less. A visitor count tells you which.

Questions retailers ask.

How do I calculate sales per square foot?

Divide annual net sales by selling floor area. $520,000 from 2,400 sq ft is $216.67 per sq ft. For a partial year, annualize first: sales × 12 ÷ months.

Should I use total or selling square footage?

Selling area, the space customers can walk and shop. Including stockrooms and offices understates how productive the sales floor is. Whatever you choose, use it consistently.

What is a good sales per square foot?

It varies enormously by category, location and price point, so this tool doesn’t show an average. Compare yourself with last year, with the same months, and with your other stores or departments.

What is gross margin per square foot?

Sales per square foot multiplied by your gross margin. It shows profit contribution of the space, so a high-margin category in a small area can beat a busy low-margin one.

Why did my sales per square foot drop?

Either fewer people came in, fewer of them bought, or they spent less. Use the sales decline diagnostic to split the change into traffic, conversion and average transaction.

Dor measures how many people walk in by the hour and pairs it with your sales, so you can tell a space problem from a traffic problem.
